Crosslinked polyethylene insulated power cable (XLPE cable) has much flexibility and is light in weight as compared with the conventional paper insulated cable. Owing to the excellent electrical characteristics, XLPE cable has an advantage of greater continuous and short-circuit current carrying capacity; in addition to that, it is easy in handling and installing as compared with the conventional paper insulated and lead sheathed cables.
Conductor shall be made of plain annealed copper wires and hard drawn aliminium wires complying with IEC 228

Insulation Resistance
Insulation Shielding
Insulation shielding shall be semi-conducting layer
Metallic Shielding
Metallic shield shall be an annealed copper tape (approx. thickness 0.09 mm) applied helically over the insulation shielding.
Laying
Insulated cores shall be cabled with suitable fillers in round shape and a binder tape shall be applied helically over the cabled cores.
Separation Sheath (for Armoured Cables)
Separation sheath shall be black PVC compound complying with ST2 of IEC 502
Armour
Armour shall consist of double layer of galvanized steel tape (type DSTA) or single layer of galvanized steel wires (type SWA). A suitable binder tape may be applied at manufacture discretion.
Outer sheath
Outersheath shall be black PVC compound complying with ST1 of IEC 60502
Cable Marking
Rating voltage, type of insulation and manufacturer's name shall be embossed on the outersheath.
